Dr. Lonnie R. Empey
Internal Medicine (Board Certified)

Dr. Empey is a native of Southern Nevada and completed high school in Las Vegas.  Dr. Empey is an Associate Clinical Professor for the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Empey completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and his medical training at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, California.  Dr. Empey completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu Hawaii in 1997. He was the Chief of Cardiopulmonary services and Chief of Endoscopy at Ireland Army Hospital at Fort Knox Kentucky.

Dr. Empey has advanced training in Gastrointestinal Diseases and has published in medical literature and medical textbooks.
Dr. Enrique (Henry) Alfaro
Internal Medicine (Board Certified)

Dr. Alfaro graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1982 he then moved to Salt Lake City where he completed his two year residency training for Internal Medicine at LDS Hospital.  After completing his residency Dr. Alfaro moved to Cedar City Utah where he had a practice in Internal Medicine for 18 years.  Dr. Alfaro speaks and writes Spanish fluently.  Dr. Alfaro joined MMA in August of 2003 where he specializes in Internal Medicine.  He looks forward to the opening of the new hospital and is very excited about being involved in the healthcare of the community of Mesquite.

Dr. Paul Havens
Family Practice (Board Certified)

Dr. Havens graduated from the University of Minnesota School Of Medicine, June 1978.  He completed his Internship and Residency in Family Practice at Hennepin County Medical Center.  Dr. Havens has served as Medical Director at Pioneer Memorial Care Center and worked in the Sather Family Practice Clinic and Dakota Clinic in Fosston Minnesota. In July of 1997 he moved to Mesquite Nevada to work for Arcon Center for Health Care.  After the closing of Arcon he moved to Lovelock Nevada to work with Perishing General Hospital.  Dr. Havens returned to Mesquite in April of 2003 and joined Mesquite Medical Associates as the Family Practice Physician and clinical director of the Moapa Valley Office.

Dr. Leo F. Black Jr.
Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine
Program Director of Integrated Healthcare


Dr. Black is a Chiropractor who specializes in Integrated Healthcare, including nutritional and musculoskeletal disorders.  He served in the United States Navy and then did his undergraduate studies in Arizona and graduated from Western State College of Chiropractic in Portland Oregon.  He has also done extensive postgraduate study in Acupuncture, Nutrition and Natural Health and is certified enzyme Nutritionist. He provides primary care and workers compensation evaluations.  Dr. Black has been with MMA since July of 2002.

Dr. Smita Mehta
Pediatrics, Board Certified
Director of Pediatric Services


Dr. Mehta has trained in both India and the United States. She is board certified in Pediatrics. After moving to the United States in 1997, she worked for the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), in Atlanta Georgia and with the (WHO) World Health Organization in Nepal.
She completed a second residency in Pediatrics at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 2003. Dr. Mehta writes and speaks Spanish fluently.  Dr. Mehta joined MMA in November 2003 and is Mesquites First Board Certified Pediatrician and is the clinic director of pediatrics at MMA.
